I am not going to write about the Normal Oscar winning films, however, I am going to write about the best winning documentary which was called Free Solo.
It is about a guy called Alex Honnold who is a free climber, and this means that he climbs without any ropes, and he does this route called free rider on El Capitan. I also want to stress that he without any ropes which means that if he falls, he dies, and it is quite unbelievable how he sort of does it. He also lives in a van and instead of using a knife and fork he uses a metal spatula. I would say that Alex Honnold lives for climbing and that he’s quite of an eccentric character as well at the start of the documentary it shows his past experiences and shows his previous climbs beforehand and those were sort of scary enough, but El Capitan is something else entirely.
Tommy Cadwell, he was in a film called the Dawn Wall and was a role model for Alex and it helps him prepare for his roots as he is sort of an expert on El Captain and Tommy sort of give his own opinion on the free soloing and he’s does it sometimes but he doesn’t want to die and he sort of thinks it’s too dangerous as well its quite an emotional sort of story.
I think the middle of the film was the best bit of it because it is interesting to see his viewpoint on climbing the El Capitan, his views about free climbing, what it means to him, his main philosophy and why he liked free soloing. What he must do for the perfect climb and how to pursue it. He loves this and he doesn’t seem to like to fear the aspect of dying as well and if he drops he falls, he sort of thinks its part testing himself and there is also a great twist in this film and it doesn’t go according to plan but. The photography in this film is honestly amazing and some bits of the film you sort of don’t want to watch but you kind of cant like stop. Its addicting in a way because you just can’t look away and its inspirational as well.
Both films the Dawn Wall and Free Solo are so good but one criticism about this film is that there is quite a lot of terminology and of climbing and if you know the specifics you will understand it better and appreciate it more. What I really like this film and I honestly can say that its better than dawn wall and its own of my favourite sports documentaries that I have seen for quite a while.
I would really recommend this film if you have never seen it before and let me know what your thoughts were about it.
